Distribution Atlas of Vascular Plants on the Earthworks of Wielkopolska

← return to list

Abstract:

The book contains distribution maps of 808 species of vascular plants which spontaneously occur on 233 earthworks of Wielkopolska (western Poland). The maps were made using the topogram method. For each species the following data were presented: the geographical-historical status, classification to the life form according to the Raunkiaer’s groups, the sociological-ecological group, the category of threat in Poland and Wielkopolska, as well as form of legal protection in Poland, a number of a species localities and observations, it frequency class and occurrence in variously managed areas, its frequency on sites of different chronology, the range of the habitat hemoroby as well as a spectrum and resources of the species. Wielkopolska is a region where the first Polish State was established in the 10th century. The province abounds in earthworks which are remnants of primeval, early and late medieval strongholds. As such, it gives a unique opportunity to carry out research on links between historical human activity and contemporary distribution of vascular plants. The results indicate that the investigated archaeological objects have a high floristic richness. Furthermore, they reveal links of many groups of plants, e.g. archaeophytes, relicts of cultivation as well as regionally rare, threatened and protected species, with archaeological sites. The investigated earthworks may be treated as specific 'environmental islands’ scattered in the agricultural landscape of Wielkopolska.
